GM Closures

According to a CNN article released today, GM projects about 30,000 cuts with closures that will save about $7 billion per year. Three of these plants which will be closed are in Michigan. Michigan has been heavily impacted over the past few years by many manufacturing jobs leaving Michigan or closing completely.

Plants which will be shut down or cut back in shifts:

- Flint, Michigan

- Lansing, Michigan

- Ypsilanti, Michigan

- Oshowa, Ontario

- St. Catharines, Ontario

- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

- Doraville, Georgia

- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

- Portland, Oregon

The United Auto Workers union has criticized this move. The number of cuts has increased 5,000 more job cuts than were announced in June.

"We have said consistently that General Motors cannot shrink itself to prosperity. In fact, shrinking General Motors only exacerbates its problems," UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and Vice President Richard Shoemaker said in a joint statement.
