With the news breaking about the port deal, the NSA wiretaps have gone out the window. Americans must not just forget about their own rights that are being violated. And on that same line, a case have been filed to stop the wiretaps.
According to KGW.com, "A lawsuit filed Tuesday in Portland asked a federal court to shut down electronic surveillance by the National Security Agency..." The lawsuit alleges that the NSA illegally wiretapped conversations between an Islamic charity director and two lawyers representing that charity. President Bush is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
In a AL.org article, "President Bush's spokesman, Scott McClellan, said those Democrats instead should spend their time investigating the source of the unauthorized disclosure of the classified program, which 'has given the enemy some of our playbook.'"
So if you feel like it, you can illegally wiretap phones?!?! If you have knowledge of a crime that has happened or is happening, it is your civil duty to tell the proper authorities. But what happens when it is those authorities who are doing the illegal act?!?! Well than, according to Scott McClellan, they have the right to get away with it. Mr. McClellan wants you to believe that if something illegal is done, the Executive Branch can check the abuse and make sure that it doesn't happen. But our entire governmental system is based off of checks and balances. Once one branch of the government takes away power from everyone else, than we go against the very basic part of our democracy.
