"People don't need to worry about security." - President George W. Bush 2/23/06
What?!?! All that we have heard is the USA PATRIOT Act is to protect our security. That we went into Iraq for our own security. We are fighting the War on Terror to safe guard our national security. We started a Department of Homeland Security. How much less do you want us to think about our security in everyday life Mr. Bush???
The ports will be partially controlled by a nation that had 2 of their citizens attack the US and have 100's of millions of dollars funneled through it for terrorism. The Bush Administration has made their entire base of support on security, but now we just let it go and still support him. Does the president want the people to vote on security like he pushed for in his last two elections, or just become complacent with the government making unchecked decisions? President Bush has put the Republican support on rough ground. And that is one of the main reasons that many Republicans are facing off with Bush on this issue. Security is one of the only topics that Republicans can discuss and have more support than Democrats.
Bush has been making many decisions putting the Republicans between a rock and a hard place (no pun intended) and it will take much for Bush to push through a policy which is unpopular with the Americans (as shown in Social Security) and unpopular with the Senate (as shown in Harriet Miers). In both of these cases, the President had little support and had to flip-flop his decision. But Bush never bases his decisions off polls and if something is popular or not.
