In the 2004 election President Bush said that the deficit would be cut in half by 2009. And now he has moved that one year earlier. An MSNBC.com article quotes the President as saying that "We recently learned that this year's deficit is projected to be 30 percent lower than we initially thought...and that means we're on track to cut the deficit in half by 2008, a full year ahead of the original goal."
But according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan Congressional group, the deficit will be $286 billion in the next fiscal year, 2007, $16 billion more than this fiscal year. If increasing the deficit is a way to cut it in half, that is a new approach to me. The 30% cut is not enough it looks like if it will INCREASE this year.
The economy has been slowly increasing in the past few years, but we still have added 3 trillion dollars to the US Federal debt over the past 6 years of the Bush Presidency. Just decreasing the deficit is not enough. To even break even from pre-Bush levels Mr. Bush would have to find 3 TRILLION DOLLARS in a matter of a few years. It is not enough to just cut a deficit that he helped create. Democrats can win this coming election on the economy because Bush and his Republican allies are NOT helping the economy, they are only hurting everyday Americans. Bush's policies have only helped the very rich Americans who could give more in taxes to help out the economic standing of our country.
