Problems Of America (And Who Would Do A Better Job)

In a recent USA Today/Gallup Poll (Oct. 6-8, 2006), it found eight issues that topped the list when asked "How important will each of the following issues be to your vote for Congress this year?"

Tied for first was corruption in government, the situation in Iraq and terrorism with 48% saying that those issues are extremely important and that closely followed by heath care at 43%. Also on the top list was the economy with 40%, moral standards in the country with 36%, gas prices at 34% and immigration at 33%. In the same poll, on ALL of these issues Democrats lead Republicans.

Democrats lead Republicans on heath care by 37% (the biggest lead) and the Democrats lead Republicans by 5% on terrorism. All the other issues fall between these percentages with Democrats leading Republicans. The MoE is ± 3 so it makes both terrorism (5% lead) and moral standards in the country (7% lead) in close contest, but on the other issues, the Democrats clearly lead Republicans.

Going into this mid-term election this can spell trouble for the Republicans. With Democrats leading the Republicans on ALL the major issues, Republicans will have a tough time winning with no solid platform. After 9/11, Republicans have used homeland security and terrorism as the main party platform and the trump card that they held against Democrats, but with this turn around of the American population on who they think would do a better job of dealing with those aforementioned issues, the Democrats may now hold the trump card over Republicans. Both the House and the Senate are within the Democrats grasp, it’s only a question if the Democrats can take hold.
