John Bolton presented his credentials Tuesday as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a job which will challenge him to work with diplomats from 190 nations in a place he has called irrelevant.
“Glad to be here,” the controversial diplomat told Secretary-General Kofi Annan before handing over his letter of appointment five months after he was nominated by President Bush.
This appointment by President Bush has angered many persons. This position will though only give Bolton the job until January of 2007. Bolton will meet with many different persons at the UN, many of which he has critized in the past. But as many people point out, Bolton is only one ambassador among over 190. This appointment is a doubble edged sword. It makes Bolton the US ambassador to the UN, but also shows that he lacks the ability to be confirmed by the Senate. What he will be able to do at the UN is still to be seen.
