President Bush has signed a 3 month extension of the USA PATRIOT Act. This is far short of the permanent extension that Bush was hoping for. This is just another problem that 2nd term Bush will have to face in the coming year.
The Democrats are coming out in bigger numbers to fight Bush head-on and many Republicans in Congress are out of the closet on there disapproval of the Bush Administration. The President has lost much support over the past year and must make some big changes to rebound in 06.
The NSA story could not have broken at a worse time for Bush. His poll numbers have just started to climb back up into the low 40's and it looked that Bush had gained support from the Republican base. But these problems can only spell trouble for Bush in the coming year. Bush must pull troops out of Iraq in mass numbers, improve the economy, and improve our international image if he hopes to gain support before the mid-term congressional elections.
