In a recent Governmental Accountability Office (GAO) report, the US has not yet "comprehensively improve[d] sharing of counterterrorism information among dozens of federal agencies". This new report shows that the current measures that President Bush and the Republican controlled congress have taken have had little effect on actual sharing between agencies within the counterterrorism group. No law is going to make the agencies share, we must have people in those agencies who WANT to share informaion, so they can improve overall protection of the American people.
The report says that currently the blame rests with the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte (above), so if he is not doing his job, replace him. The USA PATRIOT Act is an invasion of our civil liberties. But the defense of the act, is that it HELPS and ALLOWS the intelligence community to better communicate. But they ARE NOT COMMUNICATING!!! The invasion of privacy and our civil liberties cannot be sustained if it has NO results.
The government must look at this report long and hard and decide if the laws that they have set down help keep America safe, or just hurt America. The USA PATRIOT Act's main defense is now null. What reason is there left to have it?!?! The Bush Administration has said that the act has so far been a success, but how is NOT sharing information a success?!?! Change needs to happen, but not just with the laws; it must happen with the leaders as well.
The offical report can be found here, on www.gao.gov.
