According to a CNN.com article, "President Bush will promote a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on Monday."
I am personally against this proposal. But my personal feelings on this issue aside, President Bush has recently lost much political capital. Although all second term Presidents usually lose political capital, President Bush is nearing a mid-term election that is critical to his party and the President should start looking to help, not hurt his party.
This issue of gay marriage might not distance him from the party (it might even do the opposite and bring more inner party unity), but if the President uses his political capital on an issue that has NO hope of passing, it is a waste of capital. After the mid-term elections, the President will only have a clear shot to leaving office, but until then, he should be looking out for the good of his party, not just his own ideals. Political capital wasted now, will only hurt Republicans in the elections and give Democrats an upper hand.
It's time for a change...a change to Democratic leadership.

Many commentators think the President is spending time and energy on this issue only to buy some votes for the miserable immigration bill now on its way to a House-Senate conference committee. Hopefully the Republican congressmen will not sell out their principles against amnesty just so they can pile on this "marriage" thing as a feel-good bill.
