Another Person Jailed In China

Previously I posted on jailed Chinese journalist Chen Guangcheng. This week, a Beijing court sentenced Ching Cheong (pictured right) to five years for spying. Reporters Without Borders said that "this sentence is appalling. Ching was tried in an unacceptable way on baseless charges. This crackdown on journalists employed by foreign media bodes ill for the Beijing Olympic Games that are now less than two years away and deserves strong condemnation by the International Olympic Committee and the countries taking part.

This is yet more evidence that China is not open to free press (though most people knew that already). But in just a short time, China has been able to jail these reporters with little international attention. As of yet, no major media group has taken up this cause prior to the 2008 Olympics. If China is to hold an international gathering of almost all the world, than they should be held to certain standards. And if they cannot, than an event in which is about allowing everyone to compete shouldn't be held in China.

The jailing must stop in China. If China thinks that it is stopping word from getting out about its abuses of freedom, than China is in a bad spot. Because China is being looked at by international organizations in the international community, but sadly it is not being looked at by world powers, the mass media, or the world population. This must change and China must be held accountable.
