In a recent Cook Political Report/RT Strategies Poll, the President has a "total approve" rate of 39% and a "total disapprove" rate of 55%. This is an improvement from other recent polls but still President Bush is below 40%. Once more, in the same poll, only 28% believe that the country is going in the "right direction", with 64% saying that the country is on the "wrong track." Congress is only right above the country's direction rating, with a 31% total approval rating.
These numbers show what the Republican's can expect come this November. Also in the poll, when asked who they would like to see in control of Congress, 51% said Democrats, while only 40% said Republicans. Many Republicans have been trying to distance themselves from Bush and the Iraq war, with one Republican, Rep. Christopher Shays, calling for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.
