In a memo written on August 2, 2006 about a survey that the Republican National Committee commissioned, it lists what issues Republicans can win with when facing Democrats. (or what the memo says is the "most effective messages to mobilize the Republican Base for the 2006 elections")
In that memo it reports on the issues that will mobilize Republican voters. The issues are Global War on Terror, Bush tax cuts, cultural values and health care reform. (other Strong Issues and Messages are media coverage of Iraq and Democrat impeachment/censorship of President Bush)
On the first issue the War on Terror it shows the hypocrisy of the Republican Party. Republicans have accused Democrats of using the War on Terror for political gain. Now that we are coming to an election where they could loose, they use the War on Terror to "mobilize the...Base for the 2006 elections." Mobilizing voters sounds pretty political to me. That’s because voting is political. And the Republican are going to use the War on Terror to gain a political advantage. Something that many people in the Republican Party have said that the Democrats cannot. That is a clear double standard.
On the second issue the Bush tax cuts, it shows yet again how dominated by rich bureaucrats the Republican Party is. Almost all the tax cuts that President Bush made were for the rich. And even when Congress (Republican controlled) wants a minimum wage increase, it also wants to give away millions to the rich with the repeal of the estate tax. Just like in Star Trek, Bush wants America to be like the Ferengi Alliance where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
On the third issue of cultural values, what that means to Americans is abortion and gay marriage. That is what Bush wants to win on. Denying rights to women and gays. Roe v. Wade gave rights to women that the Republican party wants to take away. God forbid that women get control over there OWN bodies. The value that Republicans want to use is the value of hate of change.
And finally on the last issue, health care, it is quite simple; Republicans don't want anyone who can't afford health care to have it. The memo says that 55% of the Base of seniors have extremely strong feelings about “Democrats who want to take the
Medicare prescription drug benefit away from seniors.” And that is a total LIE. Democrats want to give Medicare to seniors. The Democrats have no want to deny the right to seniors. Republicans are the ones who believe that universal health care coverage is wrong. And Medicare is one step in that direction. It give a type of insurance to those in need. This shows the total lies that Republicans will use to get elected.
The memo shows that the Republican Party is both hypocritical and lies about issues to get elected. The American people must not stand for this to happen. This must stop in the 2006 elections. If anything, this memo must mobilize Democrats, not Republicans.
