The Democratic Party. After the end of the Democratic 40 year dominance in Congress in the 90’s and the loss of the Presidency in 2000, the country has become more and more like a one party country. The Democrats has recently been seen as the anti-Republican Party and not as Democrat’s. This can change in the 2006 mid-term election. With this election, the Democrat’s have a chance to come back into power of the House or Senate, or BOTH.
If the Democratic Party can regain control in even one of the chambers of Congress, it can re-event itself because it will be able to MAKE policy instead of just opposing policy. If a political party has control of no part of the government, than it cannot make a policy that will be implemented because it goes against the majority. But that minority still has a voice and it must be used. Having a voice as the minority is what a democracy is all about. But I will admit that the Democrats have not dealt with that aspect of government very well. The Democrats had control over some part of the government for many, many years and it has lost its way on how to deal without power. That can change.
Even if the Democrats do not gain a majority in either chamber of Congress, Democrats can still re-invent themselves. Even just picking up a few seats in Congress can help the party. After the election is over, Democrats must start pushing their policy, even if the Republicans oppose it. Democrats must stop just saying NO to Republicans and President Bush and must start saying NO to you but YES to our policy. With a policy, the Democrats can regain control. Leading to the election the Democrats must start preparing to look at serious policy of the Democratic Party. And to attract voters, Democrats must start making those policy changes NOW. Make a policy on Iraq, the Middle East, tax’s, terrorism, homeland security, the economy, stem cells, equal rights, the environment, and all the other major issues. And one lesson from Chris Matthews’s Hardball that ALL people government must learn is that “all politics is local.” The thinking of local support for power goes back all the way to The Prince and beyond. With “all politics is local” Democrats can gain the needed support to regain power in Congress.
