Yes, that right, the president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, said that "The figure of 200,000 dead is false and the number of dead is not even 9,000...Any talk of a deterioration of the situation in Darfur is false." According to the United Nations, "At least 200,000 people are estimated to have been killed in Darfur as a result of the conflict between Government forces, allied militias and rebels seeking greater autonomy, and more than 2 million others have been displaced."
Someone has to be right. And I would place my bets on the figure of 200,000. 9,000 over four years is clearly flawed and this is an attempt to gain some support for denying UN Peacekeepers from coming into his country. He also says that a UN force would be there to push Western ways on the country. If this threat he perceives from the UN is peace in his country then his worry his well placed. The ONLY reason that the UN force would go to Darfur (and the greater Sudanese area) would be to promote peace and stop the ongoing genocide that the world knows is happening there.
The proposal of a hybrid UN-African Union force has been agreed upon, but the Sudanese government has rejected efforts by the UN for the hybrid UN-African Union force. This UN force is needed to stabilize Darfur and al-Bashir is wrong when he says only 9,000 people have died because of this conflict. The UN and countries from around the world need to push for peacekeepers in Sudan. Too many people have died already in this conflict and many more have been displaced. Action needs to be take...and taken soon.
