UNESCO confirms that it is not involved in the “New 7 wonders of the world” campaign

In an article on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) website, they reaffirm that they are in no way connected to The New 7 Wonders of the World campaign.

UNESCO criticizes The New 7 Wonders campaign because they said that it is "the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the internet and not the entire world." The UNESCO article goes on to say that "This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public."

The campaign is a good tool to bring an increased awareness to the people of the world in order to promote preservation of all historical sites around the world. This list does not define what everyone, or even persons with experience with the topics covered, think are the most important sites of the world. As the UNESCO says, it reflects something that only people with internet access can express there support in and it is open also to corruption and abuse by people make multiple votes for certain sites and it cannot be counted as a true representation of the 7 best of the world. All sites should be preserved and this list does nothing at actually being better at preserving sites; it only brings out an increased awareness for people around the world.
