Renewal of Patriot Act

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House voted by a wide margin Thursday night to renew expiring provisions of the USA Patriot Act, the collection of antiterrorism measures passed after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The final vote was 257-171. The bill makes permanent 14 of 16 provisions in the act set to expire next year and extends two others for another 10 years."

  • The USA PATRIOT ACT has been seen as needed by some and a violation of liberties to others. We must look at this issue deeply. It will not only affect us in the here and now, but well into the future as well. The issue of civil liberties vs security will never end. But everything in moderation is the common saying. And this can actually ring true on this subject. It is one of the most difficult balances that this country will make. It is the government’s job to protect Americans and serve Americans. But this country not only protects Americans from hurt from terrorists and other "bad" people, but the government must also protect Americans rights. With that said, the government must work to the best of its abilities with what it has. Not what it doesn’t have. The USA PATRIOT ACT goes too far in some respects, but most sections are approvable. Only a handful of problems exist, but those problems must be fixed. The civil rights afforded to all Americans must be protected. The “Problem Sections” of the USA PATRIOT ACT must be revised and Americans must be protected.
