Next Supreme Court Nominee
According to the New York Times, some Republican Senators have said that if the replacement of Sandra Day O'Connor is too far to either the left or right, they would vote against the nomination. More Republican Senators have in recent months, started to distance themselves from the White House, and some, like Senator Bill Frist (R - TN), have outright gone against the White House. Even if only a few Republicans switch votes to nay on the next nomination that might be enough for the Democrats to deny Bush the replacement. This would be one of the biggest successes of the Democrats, showing that they still have some power and influence in the Senate, and moreover, in the federal government.
