In a recent AP-Ipsos poll (8/7-8/9) President Bush's approval rating stands at 33% and a 64% disapproval rating. What is more eye opening is that 19% of people who voted FOR Bush in 2004 are ready to vote for the Democrats in this falls election.
The Iraq war can also come back to hurt the Republicans come this fall. In a Newsweek Poll (8/10-8/11), when the question "In deciding your vote for Congress this year, which ONE of the following issues is most important to you?" the results were as follows:
22% - The situation in Iraq
18% - The economy
15% - Terrorism
14% - Healthcare
13% - Gas and oil prices
Rounding out the list was immigration, local issues in your area, other/none of these and unsure.
The issue of terrorism is what the Republicans have won on after 9/11 and terrorism is currently ranked third in the list with the economy and Iraq placing higher. And with 60% of Americans opposing the Iraq war, the voting outcome can not be good for Republicans.
Mr. Bush's current vacation during all the problems in the world is also hurting his public image. The Bush administration said that the vacation will be kept to only 10 days. They said this like it was a compromise for the President. But while the British terror plot came to a climax, the Middle East crisis grew and the Iraq war is still a major drain on the President, he took a vacation.
